If you frequent the area around O’Connor and Waverley Streets, you may have noticed some new flashing posts over the past few days. They were created by SmartCone Technologies, who are based out of Stittsville. They have teamed up with Ottawa Police and Safer Roads Ottawa on this project.
The goal is to reduce the number of collisions between cyclists and motorists in the area. The cones are installed with extra warning lights, letting drivers know that a bicycle is approaching the intersection. When the flashing stops, the driver is safe to make the turn to cross the bike lane.
O’Connor and Waverley has had several collisions involving bikes and cars, so this was the perfect intersection to launch the project. The cones will be up for 30 days, before the data will be analyzed.
