On Thursday night, Carolina Panthers quaterback Cam Newton posted a video on Twitter apologizing for remarks he made to a female reporter on Wednesday.
During a press conference, Jourdan Rodrigue, a reporter for for the Charlotte Observer newspaper asked Newton a question about one of his teammates and the physicality of football routes. Newton laughed and responded, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes like … it’s funny.”
Understandably, Rodrigue was not amused. She even confronted Newton after the press conference, but he did not apologize. Rodrigue posted a few tweets (some which have since been removed). One specific was was retweeted over 23,000 times.
I don't think it's "funny" to be a female and talk about routes. I think it's my job.— Jourdan Rodrigue (@JourdanRodrigue) October 4, 2017

In the video that Cam Newton posted on Thursday, he began by saying, “After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women. And to be honest, that was not my intention. If you are a person who took offense to what I said, I sincerely apologize to you.”
As his apology continued, he said, “…to the reporters, to the journalists, to the moms — super moms — to the daughters, the sisters and the women all around the world, I sincerely apologize and hope that you can find the kindness of your heart to forgive me. Thank you.”
Newton did not specifically apologize to Jourdan Rodrigue.
Obviously, this incident has done a lot of damage to Cam Newton’s reputation. Cam has lost many fans over this incident. He’s also lost a lot of money, as several of his endorsement contracts have been terminated.
We’re disheartened by Cam Newton’s behavior, which we perceive as sexist. We shared our concerns with Cam & will no longer work with him.— Oikos Greek Yogurt (@Oikos) October 5, 2017
Yes, he is human and people do make mistakes. I just hope that he truly learns a lesson from all of this.
What do you think?
