Everyone knows it’s not exactly “cheap” to live in Canada…
It seems like everyday someone else wants your money. Rent, hydro, cell phones, food… Everything seems to keep going up except for our wages!
Since we have a little contest on right now that will pay for EVERYTHING… we wanted to know just how much people in Ottawa and Canada are paying a month to live a “normal” life. So, we sent our team of dedicated interns to track down some facts!
You’ll be surprised to see some of the results….
1. You Might Be Paying Over $1,000 to Live Alone.
Okay, so, here in Ottawa it’s not as bad as say; Vancouver and Toronto….
But at one time, Ottawa had the 3rd highest average rent in Canada. According to this seemingly credible source, “The average monthly rent for a one bedroom apartment in April 2013 was $922 and a two bedroom apartment was $1,130. The average monthly rent for a three bedroom apartment was $1,377.”
We couldn’t find any up to date information on the google machine, but one website suggests average rent has gone up to $1,194 in a “normal” area of Ottawa (outside of downtown we think).
So, you’re looking at a big chunk of your monthly pay, going to the roof over your head! But according to Global News, we aren’t in the “cheapest cities” or “most expensive cities” to live in. We’re somewhere in the high-middle. Yay, participation trophy!
2. Canadians Pay Some Of The Highest Charges For Cell Phones
That right there says it all.
Not many other places pay that much for their cell phones. In fact, most countries offer unlimited data, texts and calls for a much lower price. One study suggests that Canada pays on average $72.90per month on top of their normal plan for unlimited data, compared to just $13.80 per month to Sweden.”
The Big 3 charge about $90 a month for a nationwide wireless plan. Why? Well as the National Post puts it:
“The more likely reason for the high prices is that the people setting these prices don’t have any reason not to.
As Michael Geist put it in 2013, cell phone carriers raise prices “because they can.”
They’re not a cartel, which would be illegal. Rather, Canadian telecoms are in a situation in which there’s no real incentive to undercut each other. The three companies know they are better off when Canadians are paying among the world’s highest rates for cell phone usage.”
3. Ontario Hydro Rates Are Through The Roof
In Canada, Ontario pays the highest hydro rates in the country. In North America, Ottawa pays the 7th highest average monthly bill for Hydro, coming in at an average of $127.61 before taxes per month.
“The short answer is that a series of policy decisions – most significantly, upgrading infrastructure and signing fixed 20-year deals with private companies to produce electricity – have increased prices over the past decade.
It hasn’t helped the government that a series of controversial decisions, such as cancelling two gas-fired power plants for political reasons and privatizing Hydro One, have intersected with electricity policy and attracted blame for the high prices…”
If it makes you feel better, compared to some other places internationally… We aren’t the worst! But let’s be honest, we’ll continue turning off all the lights… anything helps!!
4. Food Prices Keep Going Up And Up
Okay, if that’s how much we’re spending… I guess we really need to cut down on the Avocado Toast…
Have you ever been to the grocery store, bought a few things, then nearly faint at the bill?
“What do you mean it’s $12 for grapes?!?!”
Well, you’re not the only one! According to Global News, “Canadians spend an average of around $200 a month per person on food bought in stores.” A study also suggests “nearly one-quarter of Canadians are worried about how to pay for groceries”.
This doesn’t even count going out and treating yourself! So while we’re busy spreading butter on our cereal, we’re giving you a chance to change ALL this.
