A group from the Ottawa Animal Defense League will be protesting zoo regulation at an MPP’s office later today.
The hope is to get Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Marie-France Lalonde to take action against Papanack Zoo, after a recent video showed animal abuse at the establishment.
The video shows animals nervously pacing around tiny cages, being manhandled by zoo keepers, and mistreated during a photo shoot. It also contains an admission from the owner’s son that they have acquired a number of the animals by simply taking them away at birth.
WARNING: Video contains coarse language and disturbing content.
Ontario is currently the only province in Canada that does not regulate zoos via legislation or policies. The demonstrators hope that, if the zoo can’t be closed, the animals can at least be protected to ensure their quality of life.
