For the first time this year, Ottawa Public Health says mosquitoes in Ottawa have tested positive for West Nile virus.
Health officials says this is sooner than usual in the season, but because of the higher amount of mosquitoes, we could see higher than usual West Nile activity.
The virus can cause a serious illness if it enters the nervous system. But the chances are small. This only happens with about 1% of infections. There’s a greater risk for the elderly, and those with weaker immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle soreness, and rashes.
Make sure to get rid of stagnant water around your home to reduce their breeding grounds. No confirmed cases of the virus in humans this year so far. More info below!
