Ahh, Mr. Darcy.
Like so many others, he was my first literary love (sorry, every single Nicholas Sparks character ever, you just never quite cut it in comparison).
Played by young Colin Firth and Matthew MacFayden in the mini-series and 2005 movie respectively, the character has caused much swooning over the years.
Classically tall, dark, and handsome, with a brooding attitude, Fitzwilliam Darcy has been boyfriend goals ever since Jane Austen put him down on the page.
But, we have probably been imagining him wrong this entire time.
According to this article in The Guardian, “…Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice in the 1790s, our Mr Darcy portrayal reflects the male physique and common features at the time. Men sported powdered hair, had narrow jaws and muscular, defined legs were considered very attractive. A stark contrast to the chiselled, dark, brooding Colin Firth portrayal we associate the character with today.”
