The Rideau Canal Skateway has been closed for about a for about a week due to the up and down temperatures, but the National Capital Commission reminds residents to stay off the ice until further notice. The snow and freezing rain we’ve had over the past few days does not insure that the ice remains solid.
The NCC posted this on their website on Wednesday morning…
**NOTICE** The Rideau Canal Skateway is temporarily closed because of mild weather conditions and their negative impact on the ice. Rideau Canal Skateway crews will continue necessary operations to reopen the Skateway as quickly as possible, as soon as conditions are safe and weather permits. WARNING: Snow, freezing rain or water on the ice surface may hide serious deterioration of the ice thickness. For this reason, we urge the public to refrain from venturing onto the Rideau Canal Skateway. Please respect the barricades and the signs installed at access points.
