The Canadian Press has chosen their newsmaker of the year, and it probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone!
That’s right, the frontman of the Tragically Hip has been chosen as the most headline-worthy figure of the year, getting 39% of the vote according to this article put out by the Canadian Press themselves.
Justin Trudeau came in second at 27%, he was the 2015 Newsmaker.
Last month, Downie was honoured at the Assembly of First Nations special assembly, where he was named “Man Who Walks Among the Stars.”
He has been fighting terminal brain cancer, but not letting it dull his spirit – in the last year, he went on one final tour with the Tragically Hip, ending down in Kingston, he released his own solo album, teamed up with Jeff Lemire to put out a graphic novel about that album and fought for Indigenous Rights in Canada.
