Ottawa Senators goalie Craig Anderson spent a few days away from the team to be with his wife Nicholle and her family, after she was diagnosed with cancer last week. But when backup goaltender Andrew Hammond went down with an injury, Nicholle encouraged her husband to go back to help the club.
On Sunday night, Anderson made 37 saves in the Sens 2-0 shutout win over the Oilers at Rogers Arena in Edmonton.
You could see Anderson trying to hold back tears when his Ottawa teammates skated to the net to congratulate him. Anderson was named the game’s first star. Edmonton fans, who were aware of the Anderson family’s situation remained in the stands to give the Ottawa goaltender a standing ovation. Even the Oilers’ Cam Talbot, who was named second star remained on the ice to applaud Anderson’s incredible effort.
Even though it will be a long road for Nicholle, Craig and the Anderson family, Sunday night was a nice start to the journey.
