OTTAWA ISN’T OFFICIALLY BILINGUAL?!
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is in town, and took questions from reporters yesterday on some of the issues affecting Ottawans. She discussed hydro rates, the sex-ed curriculum, and local issues such as the planned Chateau Laurier expansion, and making Ottawa officially bilingual.
Wait, what?! Weren’t we already???
I can’t be the only one who wasn’t aware that Ottawa isn’t OFFICIALLY bilingual. We are very close, mind you.
According to a CBC article, there is an Ontario law known as the “City of Ottawa Act”, and it states “the city shall adopt a policy respecting the use of the English and French languages in all or specified parts of the administration of the city and in the provision of all or specified municipal services by the city.”
Wynne said that she won’t get involved with the official decision, saying “…it’s now up to the City of Ottawa to decide what the definition of that bilingualism is.”
