If you’ve been living under a rock, maybe you haven’t heard that the Rideau Centre is in the middle of a MASSIVE renovation. It’s gone from being the drab mall that just happened to be downtown, to the rising star of shopping in Ottawa. Here’s a list of everything you need to know about the changes happening at the Rideau Centre – new stores that have recently opened, as well as some we’re eagerly anticipating!
H&M and Zara Flagship Stores
Fashion lovers on a budget, rejoice – Canadian favourite H&M has opened at the Rideau Centre for the first time, and Zara, which was previously located on the mall’s third floor, has transformed into a larger, flagship store in the mall’s newly expanded wing.
This restaurant opened its doors at Lansdowne last year, and it’s hella popular. Now, a second location is scheduled to open at the Rideau Centre in 2017. Gone are the days when Manchu Wok was your best bet for lunch at the mall.
A visit to this gorgeous clothing and home decor store used to mean making a trip to Toronto. Well, no more! Anthropologie is opened at the Rideau Centre, and it’s absolutely beautiful. Great for window shopping, if the store’s wares aren’t in your budget ($100 shag pillow, anyone?)
There was a Disney store at the Rideau Centre years ago, but it closed when Banana Republic moved into the mall. But Mickey’s made a comeback – a new Disney store opened at Rideau yesterday. No word on the relationship status between the new Disney store and Banana Republic, though #itscomplicated
The Sports Experts store that used to be located in the mall, by Rideau Street, has closed its doors. In its place, a SportChek will open. Out with the old, in with the new, I guess? I’m happy, as long as I can buy a Jay’s hat.
Personally, this store has always freaked me out a little – it’s like a mix between Joe Fresh and Costco. But hey, the hype surrounding this store’s opening is REAL. Maybe it’s a Quebec thing? But at 100,000 square feet over two levels, I can’t argue that it’s a beautiful space.
My beauty blogger friends started hyperventilating when they heard that NYX had opened at Rideau. They tell me it’s high quality makeup, at affordable prices. Apparently, NXY’s in-store beauty experts are the best – maybe they can teach me how to contour?
When Ottawa’s light rail expansion is completed in 2018 (read- 2038), it will link directly with the Rideau Centre. That’s sure to bring even more traffic to the mall, which seems to be growing more popular by the day. The light rail connection may help Rideau finally secure its place as Ottawa’s #1 mall – pushing out longtime competitor, Billings Bridge (which boasts a shiny, new Walmart, Northern Reflections, and Bulk Barn)
