The NBA (National Basketball Association) Commissioner Adam Silver announced on Thursday that the league will be moving the 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte, North Carolina, due to a law limiting anti-discrimination protections for the lesbian, gay and transgender community.
The North Carolina law, known as HB2 (also known as the “bathroom law”) came into effect in March. North Carolina state legislators reviewed the law in house a few weeks back, but chose to not too make many changes.
This is a huge statement for a multi-billion dollar organization like the NBA. Full props to them for standing up the LGBT community. It’s also a huge blow to the city of Charlotte and the state of North Carolina, as millions of dollars for the local economy will be going somewhere else.
