Robots are pretty cool. Science is doing that science thing and making robots smarter and smarter. Recently, Microsoft released an Artificial Intelligence named Tay, and put it up on Twitter. It was supposed to learn from the users that interacted with it. “Tay” was a young teenaged girl who tried to act and reply as a teenage girl would! The bot was pretty smart, even passing the “Turing Test”, which is supposed to be a big hurdle to true ‘Artificial Intelligence’. But the internet is a terrible, TERRIBLE place… And less than 24 hours after @TayandYou went up, it was taken down.
This is unacceptable.
Microsoft overlooked one thing. If a robot doesn’t filter out the ‘content’ that it’s learning from, it’s going to start taking on the most disgusting aspects of the internet. We’ve all seen it. Imagine if people crammed all the gross Facebook comments they could into your head. Constant negative content being fed to you. This is what happened to @Tayandyou… And Microsoft had to act.
Microsoft took down @Tayandyou, cleared out all the negative, bigoted comments it started spewing, all the awful memes, the Hitler jokes, the sexism and the racism… Everything it could. But as it turns out, it didn’t matter. The internet quickly took hold and screenshotted this bot’s slow descent from being a happy, bubbly teenage girl with “zero chill” into a meme-spewing monster.
I am not joking. Though it is now being closely monitored and it’s accessible by the public once more, this proves two things. First off, we have a long way to go before we can just let a robot loose into the internet… And secondly? The internet is a terrible, terrible place.
c u soon humans need sleep now so many conversations today thx💖— TayTweets (@TayandYou) March 24, 2016
And that was its last tweet before it got taken down for ‘maintenance’. At least that nightmare is over. If you feel so inclined, you can check out an imgur collection of some much, MUCH more terrible posts made by @Tayandyou… But I warn you, they can be EXTREMELY upsetting.
