Doing the distance thing with your bae? I’m here to help. I’ve asked friends, family, and the internet how to make a long-distance relationship work. Here’s a list of their ten best tips:
1) Savour your freedom
While it sucks to miss out on regular dates with your bf/gf, make the most of your free time. You get to explore what you like doing on your own, and you’ll never have to turn down a night out with your crew because you promised bae a hangout
2) Watch a show together
Who says you can’t Netflix and Chill in an LDR? Start a new series together, and choose a regular time when you’ll both watch a new episode. Bonus points if you call each other after to talk about it
6) Create a date diary
Challenge each other to brainstorm cool date ideas your next visit. You’ve got two different cities to work with, and lots of time to get creative – you can do better than dinner and a movie at your next reunion.
3) No swiping
As tempting as it might be to play around on Tinder when your significant other is hours away, all the time, resist the urge. Delete any dating apps you still have on your phone. I know, you’re “just looking,” but it’s not gonna lead anywhere good.
4) Embrace technology
It’s easier than ever before to stay in touch with someone far away. You can Skype and FaceTime your partner whenever you feel like it, and it’s the next best thing to being in the same room with them. Pro tip: voice memos via iMessage are a fun surprise
5) No 24/7 texting
While technology can make long distance feel a little closer, staying in constant communication with your bf/gf can get a little exhausting. Not to mention, boring… Updates are great, but save some conversation for when you actually see each other.
Again, technology can be a wonderful thing for couples in an LDR. There are loads of toys out there that you can both try when you’re apart, and when you’re together. Some even let your partner control the toy’s movement, virtually. Time apart doesn’t have to mean a dry spell….
8) Challenge each other
That’s what a relationship is all about, right? Suggest that your partner try something they wouldn’t on their own, whether it’s listening to a new artist or going out for Indian food with their friends. If they do it, make sure they send photo evidence!
9) Amazon Surprise
Everyone’s favourite e-retailer can help up the romance in your LDR. Send them a cute gift, or a funny movie to let them know you’re thinking about them. It doesn’t have to be expensive, it just has to be a surprise!
10) Trust game strong
A long distance relationship takes a lot of trust. If you’re in this situation, you’re confident in each other and in your relationship. Big win!
